Bonk Chess v1
January 1st, 2025
Just came across this image and figured I’d upload it. The idea here was to make a set of chess pieces distinguished by minimal cuts into blocks of wood, which kinda fell apart when it came to the king and queen. The rook, knight, and bishop make allusions to the classic piece shapes, but when it came to the king and queen, I didn't really know how to make a similar move without basically imitating preexisting “minimalist” set designs that I’m not crazy about (i.e. cross-mark cut in the top, angled slice off the top, et cetera).
This was back in 2021 when I was learning Blender and Godot, which I’ve since dropped. (I may want to get back into it for games-making purposes at some point in the future, but I feel I have much more pressing stuff to work on right now.) I ended up using Blender to help me design sphysical objects, like, instead of learning AutoCAD or whatever. It might be good for that, but the one time I tried to apply it to a woodworking project was a weird footstool that didn’t happen. It turns out it’s much easier to learn wood by just grabbing shapes irl and making them other shapes. So, this one never became real. I still like what I ended up with. Actually, I don’t really like the bishops... I dunno. I guess I’m going to design more chess sets?
